Have You Ever Wanted to Write a Book?

Stack of BooksI know many of us therapists hold a hidden desire to reach more people who need our help by writing our own book. Well guess what? I truly believe every single person reading this has the potential to do so. Yes, even you! How can I be so sure? Because I am certain every one of us has a unique set of gifts, interests, and talents, and a voice that will speak uniquely to the group of people we are here to serve.

Do You Set Goals?

You may have heard of an often-cited study in self-help books in which a class of Harvard graduates were asked whether or not they had goals, and if so, which of them had written them down. Many years later, the same class were tracked down and those who had written goals were found to be earning more than the rest of the class put together!

What are your thoughts about goal setting? I’ve used goals throughout my career. It’s fascinating to look back in my notebooks and track how the use of goals has aided the development of my practice. Read More »

Video is a great way of establishing that all important connection with a potential client. At the very least, you need a good quality photo of yourself in your directory listings. (I’m shocked at how many therapists don’t include this — remember that people buy people and seeing your warm, friendly face IS going to help them connect with you!)

Many therapists are a bit intimidated by video and I was when too when I first got in front of a camera. However, with today’s technology it is incredibly easy. Although I have access to a camcorder and tripod (thanks to my brother-in-law and dad!), the video above was taken using my iPhone propped on top of a pile of books — yes really! Read More »

The Mindset of the Entrepreneurial Therapist

Last issue we focussed on Step 4 of building your private practice — creating a working ‘lifestyle’ rather than a working ‘life’. Step 5 is something not everyone talks about. Growing a practice that allows you to create a working ‘lifestyle’ serving more people and earning more money, while working less, is as much about your mindset as it is about the nuts and bolts of what you actually ‘do’.

I truly believe you have unique gifts to bring to the world, gifts that no one else has. You will speak uniquely to the clients you are most here to serve. Once you realise this, you will see that creating a practice like this is as much of a personal development exercise as it is a working endeavour. Here is some food for thought: Read More »
